George Washington's farewell to his officers
After British troops evacuated New York on Nov. 25th 1783, the tavern hosted a week later, an elaborate "turtle feast" dinner on December 4, 1783, in the building's Long Room for U.S. Gen. George Washington where he bade farewell to his officers of the Continental Army
to inform them that he will be resigning his commission and returning to civilian life.

Washington was not out of the public spotlight for long.  In 1789, he was coaxed out of retirement and elected as the first president of the United States, a position he held until 1797.

THE BATTERY FAIR June 25/26

The Battery Fair  celebrated the long-awaited opening of the Battery Oval: 87,000 square feet of Kentucky bluegrass, surrounded by 38 trees. (The sod on the magnificent lawn was laid in 2015, but needed a year to take root.) The Oval was equipped with 300 new chairs, shaped like flowers.

This Fair was a  two-day marketplace that featured more than 90 artisinal vendors, selling organic products (such as fish, flowers, fruits and vegetables, grain, herbs, and meat), many of them locally sourced, and all of them small-batch purveyors who are defining alternative, sustainable systems of natural production without compromising taste and beauty.
The vision behind the Fair is ( Warrie Price, pictured) to showcase innovations in agriculture, horticulture, food, and craft; to emphasize the connections between food production and plant production; and to support and connect small batch entrepreneurs in the Northeast region. • Architect: Jacob Wrey Mould ( he designed bridges in Central Park)
  • Description: Square pool with candelabrum at each corner; central column consisting of circular basin with umbrella above, surmounted by fixture
  • Materials: Pool and column (except for fixture)--granite; Candelabra, fixture--bronze
  • Dimensions: Pool L: 30' W: 30'; Basin Diameter: 10'; Column H: 15' (all approximate)

In 1999 a $34.6 million project fully restored the park, adding a central walkway and gardens and replacing pavement with grass and trees.  The Mould fountain with its original granite base was returned to the park with a reconstructed centerpiece and lighting fixtures.  A circular tablet at the southern end of the park was added to educate visitors about the history of the site.  At the park’s rededication, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani called the renovation “a final gift from the 20th century to New Yorkers of the 21st.”
