Memorial Day Remembrance: The New York City Police Memorial

During the Memorial Day weekend, I spend several hours in front of the NYC Police Memorial. While many rode their bikes and walked strollers unaware of what was in their midst, a few solemn groups -and individuals- would stop, look; contemplate those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!! FRAUNCES TAVERN HISTORIC SITE OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

Fraunces Tavern is a national historic landmark,at the corner of Broad  and Pearl Streets. The location played a prominent role in history before, during and after the American Revolution, serving as a headquarters for George Washington.

George Washington's farewell to his officers
After British troops evacuated New York on Nov. 25th 1783, the tavern hosted a week later, an elaborate "turtle feast" dinner on December 4, 1783, in the building's Long Room for U.S. Gen. George Washington where he bade farewell to his officers of the Continental Army
to inform them that he will be resigning his commission and returning to civilian life.

Washington was not out of the public spotlight for long.  In 1789, he was coaxed out of retirement and elected as the first president of the United States, a position he held until 1797.

THE BATTERY FAIR June 25/26

The Battery Fair  celebrated the long-awaited opening of the Battery Oval: 87,000 square feet of Kentucky bluegrass, surrounded by 38 trees. (The sod on the magnificent lawn was laid in 2015, but needed a year to take root.) The Oval was equipped with 300 new chairs, shaped like flowers.

This Fair was a  two-day marketplace that featured more than 90 artisinal vendors, selling organic products (such as fish, flowers, fruits and vegetables, grain, herbs, and meat), many of them locally sourced, and all of them small-batch purveyors who are defining alternative, sustainable systems of natural production without compromising taste and beauty.
The vision behind the Fair is ( Warrie Price, pictured) to showcase innovations in agriculture, horticulture, food, and craft; to emphasize the connections between food production and plant production; and to support and connect small batch entrepreneurs in the Northeast region. Happy Easter: City Hall Park/Jacob Wrey Fountain

  • Architect: Jacob Wrey Mould ( he designed bridges in Central Park)
  • Description: Square pool with candelabrum at each corner; central column consisting of circular basin with umbrella above, surmounted by fixture
  • Materials: Pool and column (except for fixture)--granite; Candelabra, fixture--bronze
  • Dimensions: Pool L: 30' W: 30'; Basin Diameter: 10'; Column H: 15' (all approximate)
  • Cast: 1872
  • rededicated by Mayor Giuliani 1999

In 1999 a $34.6 million project fully restored the park, adding a central walkway and gardens and replacing pavement with grass and trees.  The Mould fountain with its original granite base was returned to the park with a reconstructed centerpiece and lighting fixtures.  A circular tablet at the southern end of the park was added to educate visitors about the history of the site.  At the park’s rededication, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani called the renovation “a final gift from the 20th century to New Yorkers of the 21st.”

HAPPY EASTER

Trinity Church: Lower Manhattan
“Easter is…
Joining in a birdsong,
Eying an early sunrise,
Smelling yellow daffodils,
Unbolting windows and doors,
Skipping through meadows,
Cuddling newborns,
Hoping, believing,
Reviving spent life,
Inhaling fresh air,
Sprinkling seeds along furrows,
Tracking in the mud.
Easter is the soul’s first taste of spring.”

Brother Joscephus and the Love Revolution at the Seaport

Brother Joscephus at the Seaport

Brother Joscephus band playing at the Seaport in the shadows of the Brooklyn Bridge
Since 2007 Brother Joscephus and the Love Revival Revolution Orchestra
has been on a musical mission to make the world a more righteous place.
The two main visionaries of this 12-piece explosion of love -
Brother Joscephus and his eccentric cohort, the Right Reverend Dean Dawg -
dip heavily into a gumbo rich with the powerful rhythms of New Orleans,
old school funk and soul, classic rock and a healthy dose of feel-good gospel music.

The Band gave a rousing performance that had the audience on their feet.
When you combine the music and the message with a one-of-a-kind, high-energy stage spectacle, you got yourself one hell of a revolution on your hands.
From their home base in Brooklyn, New York, Love Revivals have taken place all over the nation, from New Orleans to Burlington, Vermont and Los Angeles to the Hamptons. The band’s legendary self-titled debut CD was released to rave reviews and accolades (“I Won’t Be That Man” and “A Child Shall Lead” were both selected as finalist in the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Competition). “Live at Brooklyn Bowl” followed in May, 2011 and won the Independent Music Award for Best Live Performance, 2011. “Revolution of Love,” released in 2013, takes their signature Epic Gospel Rock to another level. Blending elements of funk and soul with 70’s prog-rock sensibilities this groundbreaking, love-infused concept album defines the Secular Gospel movement.
