George Washington's farewell to his officers
After British troops evacuated New York on Nov. 25th 1783, the tavern hosted a week later, an elaborate "turtle feast" dinner on December 4, 1783, in the building's Long Room for U.S. Gen. George Washington where he bade farewell to his officers of the Continental Army
to inform them that he will be resigning his commission and returning to civilian life.

Washington was not out of the public spotlight for long.  In 1789, he was coaxed out of retirement and elected as the first president of the United States, a position he held until 1797.

  1. Wonderful!

Thank you Liz for this beautiful and eloquent reminder of an historic event during the founding of our country and why we celebrate the 4th. Washington's farewell speech that night is considered one of his most important.
